How safe are these? I bought a few microwave radar sensors from aliexpress a while back, but I have never used em because the tech concerns me a little bit tbh. As I understand, these are even higher frequency hmm
Support a fellow RUclipsr. As somebody else stated; you’re getting all of these sensors in one package. this is not a bad deal. mmWave sensors are not cheap. My hat is off to Lewis. When he gets more in stock then I will support him by purchasing several. Yes, as an Engineer I can make my own but Lewis gets my support and I will go on building other sensors for my house as I have been doing for years.
I was so excited when I saw that Reed was reviewing your sensor. I watched your videos as you were developing it and immediately went on the wait list. By the time I was ready to buy they were out of stock 😂😭 Glad to hear stock will be arriving soon. Moving to India from Australia soon and these will be one of the first accessories to be installed. Great work!
20 plus years ago I worked as an engineer at a company that used uwave technology for automatic door sensors. The 24 gigahertz sensor I worked on would indeed detect someone breathing. We used this as a feature to make a "safer sensor"
The use cases for proximity based automations that are this accurate are unlimited. It could really allow you to fine tune automations and increase automation resolution.
A wall plate and AC adapter designed to hook to mains, to put this on the wall or make it look like your standard lightswitch or eletrical outlet plate would make this product alot more clean.
Thanks. I was reading the manfacturer's specs and when I saw "Flashable with your own software", my head blew up. Awesome for people who like to know all ins and outs in the code.
Agree 100%. I was surprised to see when I went to pre-order these that the total cost of the board + sensors + case was $84. I still pre-ordered a couple, but I am hoping that as this becomes popular and is manufactured at greater scale, the price can come down a bit. I can think of about 10 uses of them at my house. I am also excited to see what his next project is. :)
Direct Sunlight? Hi, thank you for bringing this great sensor to our attention. Have you tested it outside? Virtually any PIR sensor that I tested triggered false alerts when the sun was shining on it or when the sun was heating up the area under it (hot air moving upwards). I'd be interested to hear how it behaves outdoors.
Have you seen Signify the company that owns Phillips and Wiz has come out on their Wiz lineup of using WiFi signal interference as a presence detection method?
A few years ago I installed a Watts hot water recirculating device at my water heater. We had a long run from our water heater to the master shower requiring a long wait for hot water to arrive at the shower head. The watts came with a manual timer to set for times you would normally need the hot water quickly. Being retired our needs vary. I was able to plug the watts pump into an inexpensive smart plug to get an easier way to set up a routine with Alexa to turn on the pump to get the water ready for the shower. I discovered the PIR sensor to set up in the bathroom attached to the exhaust fan grill. Now this device will get me the hot water when we walk into the master bath. A routine will shut off the watt’s pump if there is no movement within a specified amount of time. A pir could be set up in additional bathrooms for quicker hot water there also. I have a routine set up so the pir will only work during sunrise to sunset so as not to start the pump during an overnight trip to bathroom. Your subs may be interested in this home automation idea. The pir runs on AAA batteries. I got the rechargeable ones and they last almost 3 months. The alkalines run down quicker. The plug in pir would be a better solution for some.
Imagine how much this could help camera motion triggers. So those road facing cameras wouldn't be triggered by cars or anything beyond the range you want.
Theres now the Lite version of this. Will you cover this new edition? Im trying to understand the landscape of these sensors between EP Lite, One vs Aqara FP2
Nice thing is automating the heat recirculating pump with this. So it knowns when you get up to go to the bathroom, you'll need some hot water at the sink before heading off to bed agian.
Good review here and a non chinese product designed by an actual pro in home automation. Think I found the presence detection system I ve been looking for for more than 2 years now. Yayyyyy🤩🤩🤩
This is a great device, comes in at about the same as a hue sensor but without needing to spend more on a hub and more accurate for motion sensing! My office light often goes off cos I'm motionless. I really like the light level sensors, they are great for bringing on the lights just as it starts to get dark outside. I have an artificial sunset taking the lights from cool white to warm white (essentially daytime light to more of a sunset colour). As sunset can be between 16:00-21:30 I can ensure I keep the white lights on longer to try and trick my brain into thinking it's not getting dark as early so if it gets dark between 19:00-21:00 it will trigger. If it happens before 19:00 or after 21:00, it just happens at the respective time. Gotta love Hassio!!
I used a simple ping sensor in HomeAssistant to monitor if my computer is on or off. I then use 2 automations, one which turns the office light on by either the motion sensor or the computer turning on. (This also checks the time of day, and only puts the light on if we're approaching or after sunset) Then a 2nd which triggers when the computer state changes from on to off, then turns off the office light after 5 minutes. I find this works better than relying on the motion sensor to spot that I'm sat there (but the mmwave sensors in this video do give me ideas for use in other rooms, just not needed in my home office)
The things I'm not a big fan: - the USB cable cannot be plugged from behind - The STL for the case is not available - It has a lot of things for the presence, but much less things on the air quality And especially that it has a quite high consumption(probably due to the presence sensor) and there is no way a battery will work very long(compared to other sensors that can work 6 months on battery). I'm more looking for a netatmo replacement on my end ;)
i think when you set the "detection distance", it's not that it doesn't detect you if you are outside the set range, it's just that it "ignores" all motion that happens outside the set range. still, it's pretty good detection resolution.
I'm curious about using this for my driveway; outdoor temp, outdoor humidity, outdoor lux, pir & mmWave accuracy should let me detect objects entering the actual driveway to trigger floodlights etc. without setting off every time a larger vehicle drives by etc. Is there a listing for minimum operating temp? I'm sure a lot of sweet videos will come from this sensor! Looks sweet! And crazy that it can detect you typing without even seeing you that was amazing haha
I have used such sensors for gate / door opening automation in my job few years ago. That sensors used 24ghz waves and it could filter out humans from cars and also detect the direction of movement. Is that possible as well with this one you are using? Or is it theoraticly possible? Maybe with some firmware /software update or implementation? Thx ✌️
Are you telling us that this is some sort of ranging and detection? And it uses electromagnetic waves with a radio? So some sort of radio detection and ranging? i wonder if that has another name.
Nice shirt! I've used a couple of presence sensors, and like everyone else, we have the "turn the lights back on" wave going on every so often. Once these are back in stock, I'll definitely be picking up a couple.
I have some onorder but currently use agara fp1 and additional pir sensors. I have lowered my Time to turn off lights but I set a temporary scene before cutting them off. Basically wait 3 mins, set temp scene, turn off lights, set timer (1 hour). If you return within the hour the temp scene gets called and the lights return the same as you left. If the timer has expired the default scene (based on time of day) gets called when motion is detected. Much better wife approval
Ok 2 ideas.. use multiple sensors to track objects. This enables so many more features because now it's instant and it also has a way to predict events.. if it's walking out door then say goodbye. If near fridge. Then ask what's for dinner..
So cool. Though unsure of the price, says $37 outside but click on the link it says $73. You said it only works with home assistant. Why not smart things or anything else.
Could this be set to upon detection send a message or email or some alert that the sensor(s) are/have been tripped? I'm thinking security uses since I'm in a trashville public housing area. Perhaps link it with a bright strobe light and one of them sirens that cripples you and makes you spew/pi$$/$hit yourself so they won't be getting back out of the house with my goodies. Of course I'd be implementing a hidden override of the siren gear so we can't get stung with it, something not obvious, perhaps a 3.5mm audio socket that needs not connected (isolated) when a 3.5mm dummy plug is inserted but has a tin strap in it that means it's normally connected when the plug is removed ... it would mean unless they can find the hidden socket and know what to do with it, THEY'RE DOOMED. In our case, just logon to the app via WiFi at the door before we enter and disable the system there before entry, still disabling that 3.5mm as a backup upon entry.
Almost certainly no. There isnt anything moving on the outside. *Maybe* if it could look through the transparent (as in transparent to radar) door of a washing machine or dryer, but I wouldnt count on it, and using a smartplug is so much easier to determine this anyhow.
Hi, Can you please make an up-to-date video about the best equipment to look after a newborn baby? Would be ideal if it worked with Apple. I'd also appreciate an up-t-date best Apple supported indoor surveillance and outside door bell (with videos of course). Thanks.
I don't know what frequency those old handheld police doppler speed trap guns worked at, but if they were pointed at you, you could hear the doppler shift of the heart pumping and blood moving around. And if you spoke, the movement of the vocal cords also could be heard. It was kind of a neat effect, I figure surely somebody by now has found a way to put that effect to good use.
This is freaking awesome!!! I was always struggeling with the cooldown and had to fiddle around with timeouts and things. But this one. I need like 10 or 12 of this ... Also whats up with the bluetooth part of it? Did you use it? Can you detect who is in the room too? With a sensor like THIS you could think about things like music following a person throughout the house! Like I am sitting and working in my studio and my girlfriend is doing her own business upstairs both listening to spotify on our Sonos Speakers (got like 9 rooms with Sonos/Ikea Speakers, could need 1-2 additional for the halways) and then your playback could like follow you. It could extend to the rooms you are going to (leaving it on at the master for a decent timeout, before switching masters (one might have a tiny break in playback when doing so)) So her podcast would just follow her into the bathroom while my music extends to the living room and kitchen when grabbing some food and kinda pulling back when I left those rooms and I am back into my studio ...
mmwave is the holygrail for home automation, having that aqara fp1 basically just solve 99.99% of my problems with room presence. while this one is neat, I dont really need a AIO sensor like this, I actually need this to be placed on different areas of my (eg PIR sensor) to exactly know where I am, aqara fp1 actually have this radar like capabilities to know where your exactly at, but for now, ZHA and Z2M cant utilize this feature. If they finally able to utilize this feature, automation base where you were at is a big one addition for home automation.
$73 for "full kit" and it does not include the case, which is an extra $9. So you're looking at $82 all in, per room, for this module and you still need to provide a USB-C powering mechanism.
I wouldn't say you need one for every single room, more rooms where you tend to sit still for long periods of time, like an office, living room or perhaps bedroom. The reason the case is sold separately is so that people who wanted to mount it in a different way or wanted to make their own case weren't paying for something they didn't need or want.
@@EverythingSmartHome The price is what it is; I appreciate you taking the effort to design and produce it, but it's a bit expensive for me personally. I wish you the best of luck with continued sales.
Back here in Europe we have Knx or proprietary infrastructures like Loxone that work great with mm Wave Presence Sensors and miniservers. And yes, we try to cable everything in order to have the best responsiveness.
I'll wait till it's at $30 price point. It looks like it doesn't require a hub? Do I use IFTT or Smartlife app on this to control scenes? I dont think google assistant will control this
Hello I follow you everywhere and I love your videos and I apply them. He has an idea I’m very interested in, but I don’t know how you could do a tutorial? It’s when you open the door with a Contact Sensor the light opens or when you close the door the light closes. How do you do this? Please answer thank you.
You have a very nice home Sir. Just curious to know if this works with Alexa? I live in a 432sqft apt and I would like to use something like this to turn on my home theater system when I enter my unit and also does it know to turn on lights at night or is it just turn them on period when it detects motion because I don't want that to happen in the day time. Ty
It also detects a ceiling fan when placed even at low height which makes them almost useless in many cases. I've had to make hats from cardboard and tinfoil tape so the ceiling fan isn't seeing it off
I have a workaround for the same problem using motion sensor in my bathroom at home. The motion sensor turns on the lights in the restroom when someone walks in. If the motion sensor does not sense motion for 3 minutes, it turns the lights off. There's a problem here if you're in the shower with a shower curtains closed then the motion sensor doesn't detect you and the lights go off while you're in the shower. So my remedy to this was a door sensor on the restroom door. If the door is closed the lights won't go off because I programmed it to ignore the 3-minute rule on the motion sensor. But if the restroom door is left open for longer than 3 minutes then turn the lights off. So when you walk in to brush your teeth and the door stays open the lights come on because of the motion sensor. The light will remain on as long as there is some type of motion. As soon as you walk out the light will go off in 3 minutes as long as the door is not shut. The problem to this for me is you can't shut the bathroom door or the lights will remain on. This is the problem I have yet to solve in case you would like to shut the bathroom door while it's not occupied. And believe me there's been times the restroom door needed to be shut while not occupied. Lol especially after my dad has been in there.
I'm a full believer in mmWave now!

Cool sensor! Is there a Zigbee variant of it?
The things I'm not a big fan:

does it detect in a line ? or different shapes.

So cool to see these on your channel Reed. Been following Lewis for a while, really hope these take off for him.
I HAVE A QUESTION WOULD THE SENSOR TURN ON THE PURIFIER? AND TURN OFF THE PURIFIER WHEN SOMEONE LEAVES THE ROOM?
Sold out. I wish some factory would make these by thousands as to bring the price right down. Also, I would hope it has an easy accessible API.
What outdoor video cameras do you suggest? I have smartthings.
So cool. Though unsure of the price, says $37 outside but click on the link it says $73. You said it only works with home assistant. Why not smart things or anything else.

$73 for "full kit" and it does not include the case, which is an extra $9. So you're looking at $82 all in, per room, for this module and you still need to provide a USB-C powering mechanism.
I guess this appeals to those who can't make their own sensors.
@@RustyShackelford_ So... Me?
@@aaronkbutler Nope, Click "full kit" and it goes to $73. The board, without the sensors, is what is $37.
Where did you get that T-shirt? It’s so nice!
Also nice sensor 😂😂
Back here in Europe we have Knx or proprietary infrastructures like Loxone that work great with mm Wave Presence Sensors and miniservers. And yes, we try to cable everything in order to have the best responsiveness.
Wow... Besides the look of it... this thing is awesome. I need (more than) one!
what app are you using for automation?
Dos it work with homebridge?
very cool. I'm waiting to be able to buy one. could You share the bathroom automation. thanks
I'll wait till it's at $30 price point. It looks like it doesn't require a hub? Do I use IFTT or Smartlife app on this to control scenes? I dont think google assistant will control this
all great and fabulous, but WHEN available? we're 4 months since, still not even pre-orderable :-(
Hello I follow you everywhere and I love your videos and I apply them. He has an idea I’m very interested in, but I don’t know how you could do a tutorial? It’s when you open the door with a Contact Sensor the light opens or when you close the door the light closes. How do you do this? Please answer thank you.
How would this work with ceiling fans that are always on? Wouildn't that detect constant motion?
Hi Reed @4:14, these cooldowns. How do i change them? I need the PIR one to be lower but I can't find it anywhere. Any help?
You have a very nice home Sir. Just curious to know if this works with Alexa? I live in a 432sqft apt and I would like to use something like this to turn on my home theater system when I enter my unit and also does it know to turn on lights at night or is it just turn them on period when it detects motion because I don't want that to happen in the day time. Ty
Wish they made one for outdoor
This would be awesome in matter/thread...
Does it also works with Hoobs/Homebrigh ?
Would it react to a reflection?
Hello Can i know which smart home dashboard are you using ?
Can you put this sensor in a cupboard or cabinet and it would still detect you?
Aqara has a model - Aqara FP1 . It also use mmWave radar. I have a question. Does mmWave radar endanger for people ?
Will this sensor work with Hubitat?
What a great sensor! Do you have any recommendations for an outdoor motion sensor that will not trigger from the sun or cars driving by 30ft away?
My solution is to mount one to the backside of the mailbox catching the motion as it approaches the house.
It also detects a ceiling fan when placed even at low height which makes them almost useless in many cases. I've had to make hats from cardboard and tinfoil tape so the ceiling fan isn't seeing it off
There's definitely a "tin foil hat to protect from things hovering above" joke in there somewhere 😀
i am facing the exact same issue. does your solution work ??
@@sahilkarni1550 yes it looks goofy but I'm going to try and 3d print some nicer ones and line them with foil tape
Would adding an override kill switch work? Even if you’re limited on space you can add something like the Leviton 5634-W
@alexanderfehr2047 Thanks that may do the trick. I will have to do a little tinkering on that.
